How it works

How we deliver, end-to-end.

Four-step path from request to confirmation. State and IRS turnaround varies; our steps run in parallel where possible to compress the timeline.

1

Intake + scope

You tell us what you need through a short intake form (or a call for complex matters). We confirm scope, surface any gating issues (deadlines, missing documents, entity status), and quote any state fees that pass through at cost.

2

Prepare + verify

Our specialists draft the filing, verify entity details against state databases, run internal QA, and route any items needing your sign-off. You see drafts before anything gets submitted.

3

File with the authority

We submit directly to the state Secretary of State, FinCEN, IRS, USPTO, or whichever authority your filing requires. We pay state fees at cost and track the submission identifier in your account.

4

Confirmation + vault

Stamped certificate, IRS notice, or filing receipt arrives in your SOC 2 encrypted document vault the moment we receive it. Next filing deadline auto-added to your compliance calendar where applicable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Do trucking and transportation companies need special licenses?
Yes. Interstate motor carriers require: DOT number (free, federal safety identification), MC number (operating authority, $300 federal fee), BMC-91 / BMC-91X insurance filings, BOC-3 process agent designation, UCR (Unified Carrier Registration), IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) license + decals. Intrastate-only carriers have state-specific requirements. File.Business handles DOT/MC authority + ongoing renewals.
Should a trucking business be an LLC or other entity?
LLC is typical for owner-operators (1-5 trucks). Larger fleets often use S-Corp election for SE tax savings on driver-owner compensation. Asset-heavy carriers often separate truck ownership entity from operating entity for liability protection. File.Business handles multi-entity structures for transportation operators.
What insurance is required for motor carriers?
Federal minimum (general freight): $750,000 liability. Hazardous materials: $5M. Household goods movers: $300K cargo + $5K cargo/single shipment. Most carriers carry $1M-$2M liability (above federal minimum) + cargo insurance + physical damage + bobtail/non-trucking liability. Coverage filed via BMC-91 with FMCSA.
How does IFTA fuel tax work?
Interstate truck operators must register for IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) and file quarterly returns reporting miles driven and fuel purchased in each state/province. IFTA reconciles fuel tax between states - you pay fuel tax to the state where the fuel was burned, not just where it was purchased. Quarterly returns required even if no miles driven that quarter.
What's the difference between MC, DOT, and USDOT numbers?
DOT number (or USDOT number): federal safety identification, required for most commercial vehicles. MC number: operating authority, required for FOR-HIRE interstate transportation of regulated commodities. Most carriers need BOTH. Intrastate-only carriers usually need only DOT. File.Business issues both numbers as part of the MC + DOT bundle.
